Tail based swimming action comes alive with the Castaic Boot Tail. Like its smaller cousin, the Boot Tail Sardine, the Boot Tail is a soft body lure. Its perfectly-weighted trout-shaped body makes it easy to fish. Just cast or troll it, move it fast or slow.

Field and Stream named the SBT “One of the 50 greatest lures of all time” in 2006. In it, they wrote:

It’s worth getting one of these big, soft-plastic swimbaits just to watch it swim on the end of your line. The lifelike action is mind-boggling. It’s named after the Southern California reservoir where monster largemouths get that way by gorging on hatchery rainbow trout.

They’ll gorge on this lure, too, and not just in California. Let the slow-sinking, 8-inch lure get down to the edges and dropoffs where trout and bass intersect. Crank, twitch, and hang on for dear life.

The textured scale and details of the bait move beyond aesthetics. The raised gill plate and fin, bulging eye, and thumping tail add to the realism.

The bottom of the Boot Tail features an extra eye for additional hooks.

The Castaic Boot Tail is available in 28 colors, 4″, 6″, 8″, and 10″ sizes and fast and slow sinking models.

Okay. I went fishing the other day and saw some striper chasing some rather small trout, but a little too big for one gulp. They’d probably pick at it, til it died and then had their way. so i decided to go out and find a lure that looked like a trout, and swim like one. i had in mind the fact that the striper couldn’t take it in one gulp so i went a little smaller. I bought this lure today(4″), not really intending on catching anything with it, but what the hell. I got it anyway. I catch it out a few times and perhaps 1 hr into the day, BOOM. the striper tackled it like a crack of thunder. i fought with it for maybe 6 seconds and the fish shot out of the water and snapped my 4lb line….. i know the bait was a little heavy for the line, but i wasnt planning on a 7lb striped bass to take it… needless to say i was annoyed. so i called it a day, ate my sandwich and went home. i guess i’ll just have to buy me another one and a new spool of line for these honkers. sheesh.
